Haarlem es una ciudad situada al oeste de Amsterdam. En 1658 los holandeses dieron, en honor a este municipio, el nombre de Nieuw Haarlem (‘Nueva Haarlem’) a la localidad de Manhattan, Nueva York. Luego, en 1664, cuando los británicos tomaron el control de la colonia holandesa la bautizaron con su nombre definitivo: New York (Nueva York). Es una ciudad con bastante actividad, excelentes restaurantes y una gran plaza (Grote Markt) con la iglesia de St. Bavokerk, que cuenta con uno de los órganos mejor conservados de Europa. En verano, la gente disfruta del sol, las terrazas, las cervezas (algunas propias de la ciudad) o, a veces, simplemente se relaja leyendo un libro como es el caso….una buena recomendación!

Haarlem is a city located west of Amsterdam. In 1658, the dutch gave, in honor to this city, the name of Nieuw Haarlem («New Haarlem») to Manhattan, NY. Later, in 1664, when the british took over the dutch colony, they reborn it as New York.  This is a city with a lot of activity, excellent restaurants, and a big city center (Grote Markt) with the St. Bavokerk church, which has one of the biggest and better organs in Europe. During summer, people enjoy the sun, the terraces, the beers (some city-made) or, sometimes, they just relax reading a book as this citizen here….a good recommendation!!!
